Conor from EMC chats to ‘Not How, When!’ resident, JL Razza, in anticipation of their party this Saturday with Red Light Radio co-founder, Orpheu The Wizard.

Tell me about ‘Not How, When!’. Who are you and what’s the club night all about?

“Not How, When! are a crew of music friends Sonny Emerald, JL Razza and Flukey who are in their 16th year of playing records together. We all have been collecting records over 25yrs each and will never stop.

Our club night is about selecting records to create a friendly dance floor atmosphere with music from across the globe varying from the 70’s, 80’s up to the present year. Expect anything musically from Van Morrison to Brass Construction or Larry Heard and far far beyond…”

Your guest DJ this Saturday, Orpheu The Wizard is one of many Amsterdam based DJs you’ve brought to Cork. What’s your connection to the Amsterdam scene?

“The Amsterdam crew have been coming to Cork to DJ since 2016. So far we have had Tako (co-founder of Red Light Records and the global record label Music from Memory), Satoshi (Rush Hour), Robert Bergman (Rush Hour) and Abel (co-founder of Red Light Records and Music from Memory). And Saturday we have Orpheu, the founder of Red Light Radio, who is now music director at Het Hem and running the label Wake Dream as well as playing all over the world in venues and festivals like Dekmantel.

We made a trip to Red Light Records in Amsterdam in 2015 and loved the vibe there. They were playing all of the music we love like Bobby Konders and Curtis Hairston and we knew we were home.  We started getting to know the guys in the shop and as a result also the guys in Rush Hour records. They were always welcoming and really decent friendly people and we became friends with them all.  We started DJing in Red Light Radio in 2016 and later at Dynamic Range and Het Hem in Zaandam and have enjoyed every minute in that fine city. A 3 hour set in Red Light Radio and meeting people from all over the world outside in the courtyard  was a major highlight.”

Not How, When! Has been at the forefront of The Pav’s post-pandemic use as a club venue. What’s it been like bringing electronic music back to The Pav?

“We think it’s great to be pushing alternative and sophisticated forms of dance music in the city again after the pandemic. The city needs venues like The Pav. To be able to dance somewhere is such an important part of life and we will keep playing and providing music from our hearts.”

What can the lovely people of Cork expect this Saturday at ‘Not How, When!’?

“We start at 8pm and it’s free entry. Orpheu The Wizard will be on at 9pm. Music will be across the board, house, boogie, disco, balearic and other types of DANCE music.  Also we have Cork/ Amsterdam visuals by Loop Conspiracy.”
